HI LAURIE, I POSTED 1/2 REMODEL NEED SOME SUGGESTIONS. SO FAR NO SUGGESTIONS, NOTHING. THE KITCHEN I'D SAY HAS POTENTIAL TO BE STUNNING. BUT NOW I FEEL IT NEEDS BLING REARRANGING NEW FURNITURE, MAYBE NEW ISLAND, DINING SET WINDOW COVERING. I AM AT A STANDSTILL AT THE MOMENT FOR LACK OF IMAGINATION. MY CABINETS ARE GREYLOFT A DARK GREY, MY COUNTERTOP IS QUARTZ WITH SPECKLES OF MIRROR AND GLASS, MY BACKSPLASH IS MOTHER OR PEARL, A PEWTER GREY, CLEAR GLASS , OPAGUE GLASS. I KNOW IT CAN BE AMAZING. I THINK MAYBE PLANTATIONS SHUTTERS, NEW ISLAND, AND SMALL DINING WITH AN AMAZING CONTEMPORARY LIGHTING FIXTURE. A LITTLE WORKK ON THE MANTLE, LET'S SEE WHAT YOU SUGGEST. IT WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.

Hey Laurie –you are so right! I have dark polished wood-look laminate floors and I spend a lot of time polishing them. I knew I might have some issues when I installed them, but my love of the look got the best of me. I still love the way they look but they are a bear to keep up!__As for pairing wood cabinetry with wood flooring, I usually try not to match them up because the closer they are in tone and color the more likely they will not go together. In this instance, I think a measure of contrast is better. When I chose my flooring, I picked a darker color that had light highlights that matched the cabinetry. That worked out very well.

Hi Laurie, I have had light oak laminate floors in my dining room, kitchen, breakfast room and hallway for over ten years. I love them. All I use to clean them is warm water and a microfiber cloth. Cleaners just seem to make the floors smear and dull.

I am remodeling my kitchen and bathroom. Should I use the same color cabinetry throughout the house?

    • Laurie_March says:

      Debbie –

      Thanks for coming by!

Plenty of people do use the same color of cabinetry through the house. I think it can work, however I find it also works to use wood tones in some rooms, and painted tones in others. There is no hard and fast rule, however it does tend to be easier to touch up a paint color, rather than a wood stain.

Think about the light in each room. Are they dark? Are they sunny? The brighter the room, the more freedom you have to use more distinctive wood or paint tones.

Its worth considering your flooring choices for each room too – so that the floor materials can 'speak' to the cabinetry materials. If you've got wood floors in or near the kitchen, look for a cabinetry color that coordinates with what you've already got.

Whites and creams never go out of style. :)

Can't wait to hear what you choose!

    Laurie,
I have a kitchen that needs help. The house was built in 1920's. I would really like to paint the cabinets white. What is the best way to do this? I also need new counter tops. What is the best when they are going to be used everyday? I also wanted to mention to you what a fantastic job you did as the house counselor for the Blog Cabin 2013 in N.C. . I watched that video over and over again. It was never boring. You made it such a happy place to view over and over again. Great job. You also favor my sister, Sharon. Thank you for helping me with this problem.

Laurie, I have a question on flooring. Being we have a total of 3 dogs which 2 of them are big dogs I've been investigating Laminated or Vinyl interlocking plank flooring, I've been told if the laminated gets wet and stayes wet fo 4 hours or longer it would destroy it and with Vinyl it's waterproof. What is your opinion on either laminated or Allure Ultra Resilient Plank Flooring?? Tile is out I hate cleaing the grout lines.. Appreciate the help 9/28/13 9:00 AM

Hello Laurie; My parents own a home that is 45 years old and the kitchen cabinets are all wood and just plan clean varnish over them. My father wants to paint them but not sure what color would be appropriate for this old home. The floors are old vinyl white and they are coming apart on the floor. The walls are sunset yellow. I just want to paint them with semi gloss paint. I do not plan to sand them down or do any kind of finishing touches to them just paint them. What are your recommendations for this project?

  13. Karen says:

We are remodeling the kitchen and I am paralyzed over the cabinet decision. The existing cabinets are frameless particle and off white. I thought I wanted white Thermofoil, but I'm told framed wood cabinets are the preference of most people. Now I'm torn between painted white or a Caramel stain not knowing if the darker cabinets are a better design choice. I'm also told the Florida humidity can cause issues with painted cabinets – they absorb the moisture, swell and the paint can separate. The framed cabinets definitely reduce useable storage, especially drawers. How does one find confidence to decide the best color, design and durability.

  14. Lauren says:

Hi! We are replacing our counter tops and floors w/ butcher block counter top and laminate floor. I am clueless when it comes to colors and matching. To add to things, we have hard wood floors in the rest of our house so I'm not sure what color to go with in the kitchen. Our kitchen has white cabinets and yellow paint on the wall. The wood floors in the rest of our house are old and have a lot of character and are probably a natural oak? They have some lighter brown and some darker brown colors in them. Do I go with a darker laminate flooring or try to match the rest of the house?
