My own recent remodeling experience was executed by a contractor who I consider a friend. We had worked together for several years and I was well aware of the quality of work that his crew consistently produced. If not for this first-hand knowledge, I think I might have hired someone else just because I would not want to jeopardize our friendship. I think it's important to go into a working relationship with a friend if you know that you and the friend will work out issues as if you were not friends. You need to be willing to speak up if things are not done to your expectations and they need to feel free to speak out if you are not meeting your end of the bargain. And I agree: absolutely get everything in writing and be sure that they are licensed and bonded before any work begins. Still ~having a friend do the work made the months of dust and inconvenience more tolerable. And I probably made the time drag out due to my interrupting and chit-chatting while they were trying to work. In the end, I think we were all 99.9 percent with the outcome. And we're still friends!
