Dear Friends, Family and Weekend Warriors,
In light of the recent revolution in paint products, I’d like to mention one very important fact regarding no-VOC paints: They’re only as good as what you’ve got on underneath!
Tip: Use tinted primer beneath a bright shade, like orange. Image courtesy of HGTVRemoldels
It’s a safe bet your walls will benefit from a coat of primer before you change colors, especially if you’re going over something dark or when it’s been more than a year since you’ve painted. Or, to put it another way, if your walls could talk, they’d ask for primer.
Many fine paint lines have come out with a low-chemical or non-toxic version of their paints. This is wonderful for those of us painting rooms that people are living in!

Here are a few of my favorites: Mythic Primer, Benjamin Moore Natura Primer and Olympic Primer
When you pick out a gorgeous green for your kitchen, or one of fifty shades of gray for your bedroom, please remember to grab a gallon of no-VOC primer while you’re at it — your lungs will thank you for it.

Is their primer for Latax and enamal paints. Or does it make a difference?
I tried and quickly RETURNED the paint/primer mix of Valspar. Like putting
light colored mud on the walls. I've painted with LOTS of different
types of paint over the years, and prefer Olympic, Sherwin Williams
Cashmere variety, and Dutch Boy was decent for the price at one time.
As for priming?? Perhaps if light over dark. I'm going to put two coats
of anything on the walls, and applying it the right way, and have never
used primer.

Hey! Love your notes on paints you like. Thanks for commenting!
Oh…and let me add, never the flat version. Always eggshell to satin, and semi-gloss
on trim and some walls.
What are your thoughts on the paint and primer combos? I’m preparing the outside of our front door for a new color. After considering hundreds of colors we’ve finally chosen a mustard yellow. But I’ve already put dark blue and green on the door to sample so I will definitely need a primer and was hoping to use one of the combos.
Thanks in advance for your help!
The non-toxic cleaning supplies to blown insulation, we are always thinking of ways we can reduce our impact on this beautiful paint
