KBIS 2012: Multi-Generation Homes

Last week’s Kitchen and Bath Industry Show (aka KBIS), featured lots of new smart technology, not to mention some cool celebrity collaborations.

One top trend? Products for multi-generational homes. Today’s sandwich generation homeowner might be baby-proofing while caring for older relatives at the same time. Here are a few tips from the show to make life easier.

Karran Rollin Raq

I was wooed into the Karran booth by the sleek, seamless edges of many of their sinks. Built for easy under-mounting, their single- and dual-basin sinks have great lines.

While I was there, I fell head-over-heels for their new Rollin Raq. This clever over-the-sink dish dryer rolls right up to store effortlessly in any drawer, perfect for kitchens with limited counter space.

Moen Retractable Towel Ring

When has a kid ever returned a towel to a towel bar or hook? (For that matter, when has a guy ever hung up a hand towel? But I digress….)

Moen's retractable towel ring keeps towels from cluttering up the floor.

Moen launched a retractable towel ring with an 11″ cord that allows you to pull the towel out to dry your hands. Then, when you release it, the towel goes right back into place. I can see this in the laundry room, kids’ bathroom or any space where your family members might have a reach/return issue.

Invisia Collection Grab Bars

We’re all getting older. THERE! I’ve said it. It’s time that grab bars become household words. The Invisia Collection from HealthCraft knocked my socks off, simply because they created beautifully integrated support bars that I’d put in any bathroom.

By the way, many of these products are making their way into homeowners’ guest rooms in anticipation of older parents’ visits.

Invisia Collection Serena Seat

The older we get, the harder it becomes to balance, especially in the shower. The Invisia Collection Serena Seat is an affordable, beautiful fold-up chair that hangs on the wall. Its lines are simple, and it works in any style bathroom.

Don’t let the slim profile fool you –– this seat has a 500-lb capacity.

Hafele LeMans Corner

After KBIS, the role of Lazy Susan has officially been recast in my heart. Enter a new starlet: Hafele’s LeMans Corner!  Or, as I lovingly refer to her, the Foxy Peanut.

Talk about space optimization. The pullout looks a little quirky, but every inch of this curvy hardware serves you (and your fancy olive oil collection) efficiently and effortlessly.  She’s a smooth operator but I’m on board –– and so are all my heavy pots and pans!

Did you find this product yet? I am in the business, but on the wholesale side of it. We put these into stock 3-4 weeks ago, and we can't keep them on the shelves.

Hi Justin – I really want this product and I can't locate it. I live in Illinois (Chicago area) – any chance you can point me in the right direction?

How smart is the retractable towel holder! Looks like the towels wouldn't end up on the floor like they do in my bathroom! Our bathroom is so small that when you walk in the bathroom, the towel on the towel bar gets knocked off by just barely touching it.
